Diamonds are like the most blissful form of your abstract emotion- love. It is said that true love cannot be expressed enough to justify its depth but diamonds help you materialize this abstract, mystical emotion.

Buying diamonds is like buying timeless treasure. They add to our life and then live on to tell tales of undying love to other lifetimes!

And what better place to find the best diamonds than the Diamond District of New York!

Even if you are at the best diamond store, picking diamonds still remains an art. Although the seller will navigate you through an extravagant variety of diamonds that scream volumes about the quality, you can only pick the best diamonds if you have a certain level of diamond knowledge with you.

The 4 Cs of Diamonds are the very basics you must know. Here’s a brief explanation of the 4 Cs:

1. Cut

The “Cut” of a diamond basically refers to the diamond's shape, proportion, and facets. The most important factor being sparkle, a diamond must reflect and disperse light properly, therefore, it must be properly cut.

Cuts are graded on a scale of 1-5 from excellent to poor. It all depends on the amount of light that reflects out of the stone. A stone that is cut too deep or too shallow allows the light entering from the crown to escape from the pavilion of the stone, thus hindering the desired sparkle.

You must also consider the girdle thickness because a thicker girdle is an indication of a poorly cut stone.

2. Clarity

The number of blemishes, flaws, and inclusions in the diamond determines its clarity.

The tiny imperfections in the diamond that are naturally formed when the diamond was developing are referred to as inclusions. They interfere with the amount of light being able to pass through. Clarity ratings are of two types:

(i) Flawless - FL

(ii) Included - I

Brilliant-cut diamonds have multiple kite-shaped facets to disguise inclusions, whereas emerald-cut diamonds have a step-cut pavilion and a large table which makes it very easy to identify inclusions.

3. Color

Natural diamonds come in a wide range of colors. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has rated diamonds on a color scale D-Z, wherein D means colorless and Z means light yellow.

Colorless diamonds are priced higher than those with color.

4. Carat weight

If you are looking for diamond engagement rings in New York, you must be very thorough with your understanding of carat weight.

While “Carat Weight” refers to the actual metric weight of a diamond, “Karat” refers to the purity of gold. People generally mix these two terms.

Carat weight is one of the largest price-determining factors and larger carat diamonds are more desirable and rare.

Even the best jewelers in New York rely on the 4 Cs of Diamonds. Two diamonds with the same carat weight might vary in size, color, and cut, hence the difference in prices. This infers that all the 4 Cs also have individual significance.
